Two Categories of Bad Resumes

Most poorly written resumes fall into one of two categories. Learn what these categories are so you can keep your resume out of both of them.

  1. Resumes that attempt to describe everything the job seeker did on a daily basis. Not only are these resumes too long, but they are boring. Employers don't want to know, nor do they care, about every little task you performed. They are more interested what value you bring to the company. This brings us to the second category of bad resumes.
  2. Resumes that highlight no accomplishments. Employers aren't simply looking for someone who has performed the same job duties before. They are looking for someone who has saved money, improved efficiency, expanded sales, leaped tall buildings...okay, I'm getting carried away, but you get the picture.
In addition to keeping your resume out of these categories: proofread, proofread, proofread. I can't emphasize this enough. Proofread your resume, then put it down for a day or two. Then proofread it again. Have someone else proofread it. Most people underestimate the importance of correct grammar and spelling in business communications-including resumes.
